The Wedding Gown and You
Everyone tells you the you need to diet and workout to fit into your dream wedding gown. While that is usually true, be careful not to over do it.
When polling the bridal boutiques and designers that we have worked with in the past, the biggest problems they encounter are with brides who diet and workout. Surprising, we know. It makes sense though because brides are the ones who are expected to look absolutely stunning, so it would of course make sense that brides would be frantic to, well, look absolutely stunning. That of course involves dieting, working out and usually, unintentionally, stressing out about it all. That’s why it seems so much easier for mothers of the bride and groom and the bridal party to fit perfectly into their gowns. They don’t worry like a bride does!

The typical time table for brides and their wedding gown quest is to search for and find the perfect dress, to which alterations will made so it will fit perfectly. This all happens at least 18 months before the wedding to allow for multiple fittings, alterations and shipping, all the logistical stuff. Then go through the diet-fitness process. At the final fitting, which happens to land usually two months before the wedding, gasp, it doesn’t fit as perfectly as at the first fitting. |
| The problem is that some brides don’t diet and work out enough so when it comes time to pick up the wedding gown, they’ve actually gained weight or just not lost enough. Usually this shows often in the abdominal area, which, of course, with slick fabric arranging can be hidden stealthily. |

| But on the opposite side of the coin, some brides workout and diet so much that they lose too much weight. Unfortunately, this can happen almost anywhere on the body, chest area included. Losing too much weight isn’t always due only to working out and dieting. Some brides diet and workout just enough yet still lose too much weight. Why? More than likely because of stress, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be stress about the Big Day. It could be external stress with work or family or whatever number of regular influences. |
| How does a bride avoid the situation of not losing enough weight and losing too much weight? First of all, the most important thing when it comes to losing weight and toning up is to know your body. Know what kind of body you have. Know where your problem areas are. If you are unsure, consult a licensed and certified personal trainer or a physician, although through the years, these little facts about your body should become evident. |

Once you know your weight gain/loss tendencies and your body type, then you can pick out a diet and workout regimen that works and will be effective for you. There are so many out there and they all work differently.
Finally, if at all possible, keep your stress levels to a minimal. This is the best way to keep your diet and workout regimen on track, your hormones and physical health on level as well as help to keep your complexion flawless.
Other things you can do to avoid this problem can be to hire a qualified and expert seamstress or tailor who can alter your dress at the last minute if necessary. If you bought your gown at a boutique, make sure they provide free last minute alterations. A good quality, respectable boutique would absolutely offer this.

One last bit of advice, if you are somewhat far from your ideal wedding day figure/weight, consider doing this instead. When you go shopping for your gown at around 18-20 months before the wedding, only look, don’t buy yet. Look for THE gown, the dream gown you want. If you can, somehow obtain a photo or image of the gown online or from a catalog or magazine. Use that as motivation for you during your workouts and imagine yourself, on your wedding day, fitting into your gown perfectly! And then aim to lose the weight or obtain the figure within the next, say, 10-12 months. After that time of 10-12 months, after that weight loss or figure transformation, go and find the dress again and try it on. Have it altered to fit perfectly (especially if you are determined to lose more weight and actually will do it) and then order it! You should make your deadline to order your dress at least 6-8 months before the wedding for good measure. This method, while a bit nerve-wracking, saves you money on alteration costs and puts you into an awesome motivational mood to achieve your wedding day figure goal and to have your wedding gown fit like a glove! |
