While some people may find wedding flowers to be a waste, every rhyme as its reason, and flowers are no exception. The purpose and importance of flowers at a wedding was primary in many a weddings of the past. And even though flowers may not hold the same purpose, they are certainly important as mood-setting tools and can lend a helping hand with the development of a specific wedding theme.Here are some very specific uses for flowers in weddings of the past:

  • By carrying a bouquet of flowers, brides from ancient times warded off evil spirits during wedding celebrations because bouquets consisted of strong smelling herbs and spices
  • Roman brides carried bouquets of flowers because, at the time, flowers symbolized fertility and what a perfect time to “show off” one’s fertility than at your wedding!
  • As time went on, each individual flower began to take on its own unique meaning. [If interested, a very brief “lesson” on the language of flowers is given in Kate & Leopold.] Soon flowers were used outside of weddings as love notes! Of course, flowers and bouquets at weddings eventually adopted those meanings and carried them through.
  • Even in modern times, the groom wears a flower (aka boutonniere) from his bride’s bouquet in his lapel or buttonhole. This tradition stems from medieval knights who wore his lady’s colors as a declaration of love.

These traditions have, so to speak, stood the tests of time and nowadays are adapted by brides and grooms to become unique and personal touches to their weddings. In today’s weddings, most brides and grooms combine tradition with individuality so while you may see, at some weddings, matching bridal, bridesmaid and flower girl bouquets with matching groom ahd usher boutonnieres and centerpieces, more often, you’ll see designs that are totally unique and expressive of the very personal tastes and ideas of the bride and groom. So be ready to see some pretty awesome and interesting combinations when it comes to flowers!
